VELVET CRUMB CAKE WITH BROILED
TOPPING
 
1 1/2 c. Bisquick baking mix
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. milk or water
2 tbsp. shortening
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
Broiled Topping (below)

Grease and flour square pan, 8 x 8 x 2 inches, or round pan, 9 x 1 1/2 inches. Beat all ingredients, except Broiled Topping in large bowl on low speed, scraping bowl constantly, 30 seconds. Beat on medium speed, scraping bowl occasionally, 4 minutes. Spread in pan. Cover and refrigerate up to 24 hours.

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Bake, uncovered, until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Spread warm cake with Broiled Topping. Set oven control to broil and/or 550 degrees. Broil cake with top about 3 inches from heat until golden brown, about 3 minutes.

BROILED TOPPING:

1/2 c. flaked coconut
1/3 c. packed brown sugar
1/4 c. chopped nuts
3 tbsp. butter, softened
2 tbsp. milk

Mix all ingredients.
