LESLIE'S FAMOUS SLOPPY JOES
1 1/2 pounds ground beef
1 onion, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
1 cup water
1/4 cup Heinz ketchup
3 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon of dried mustard
1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
8 hamburger buns, split

In a sauce pan (for small consistency) or a large skillet put on medium-high heat, sauté the ground beef for 5 minutes. Add the onion, red bell pepper, green pepper, and 2 cloves of minced garlic; sauté for 5 more minutes, or until onion is tender. Drain the fat.

Mix in tomato paste and water, stirring until paste is dissolved. Stir in ketchup, garlic, chili powder, paprika, vinegar, oregano, dried mustard, salt and pepper.

Add brown sugar 10 minutes before stirring (If you add it too early it may burn).

It's hard to find a recipe that will match a store bought product closely. This sloppy jo recipe is so close to Manwich that my hubby didn't even complain. We really enjoyed it and I was so pleased to have a winner in the pursuit of trying to elimninate store bought items and make them myself and make them so they taste nearly as good. LOVE IT!! Keeping this recipe to make over and over again!

This is the best sloppy joe recipe I have ever made! It out classes all the others. It's also one of the healthiest versions I've seen as well. You can also substitute ground turkey for the ground beef...not quite as tasty but still really good and healthy.

Followed the recipe, but had to add a few things to get them to taste a little more flavorful. Used fresh oregano instead of dried, added cayenne pepper, red crushed pepper, worcestershire sauce and barbecue. (So used it more as a guide).

I have never had a good sloppy joe recipe. I looked through cooks.com and found this one yesterday. This recipe is amazing! I had a big crowd so I tripled it. It will now be the only way I make sloppy joes. Thanks Leslie!

This is a great recipe. Sometimes, if I don't have a red or green bell pepper, I will substitute celery.

I would give this 50 stars if possible. I cut the recipe down (enough for just a a couple of meals)... only added a little cumin. I have MANY Sloppy Joe recipes - but they are all going to be trashed. THIS IS IT! The ONLY one I will ever use in the future. Thanks Leslie for sharing. THIS is absolutely a WINNER...

Easy recipe. I also add finely chopped celery or celery salt. If you like a little more spice, add small amount red pepper flakes, hot sauce or barbeque spice. Enjoy! Mary

They say you should get 10 sloppy joes out of one pound of hamburger. So 10 pounds should yield 100 sandwiches, but that depends on how much other stuff is added.
