 Alice Lehman (Ohio) says:
I mix the dressing on high speed in my blender. It's a delicious thick sweet dressing that really makes the salad unique. Everybody loves it!

Also if I'm not mistaken it had water chestnuts in it. However I could be wrong.

This is a fabulous salad...yes, includes water chestnuts which add a great crunch. We used to go to Betty's restaurant all the time - wonderful!

 Patti (Michigan) replies:
Only bean sprouts - no water chestnuts not in Timkos recipe.

 Auty (Washington) replies:
Yeah, no water chestnuts. You could buy fresh beansprouts easier back then, that's where the texture comes from.

 Chheryl Washam (Ohio) says:
I thought the dressing also had celery seed, mustard seed and basil in it and brown sugar instead of white sugar?

 Jeff K (Michigan) says:
The picture of this recipe shows alot of iceberg or romaine lettuce, and I've always had it made with a 50/50 mix of lettuce and spinach.

Never had it with waterchestnuts, but it sounds like a great idea!

Personally, I think the stupid-thick dressing could be thinned out a pinch...the super-thick stuff makes it hard to get a good distribution on the salad and you use more than you ought to. And, make sure the onion is super-fine.

My favorite salad by a long shot. :)

BETTY's DRESSING is my FAVORITE! A few Ingredients I noticed were left out of the Salad DRESSING recipe so I thought I would just ADD them directly from the Betty's Dressing Jar. CORN OIL, SUGAR, KETCHUP, GARLIC spice, CHOPPED ONION spice, White VINEGAR, WORCESTERSHIRE sauce, Ground up ANCHOVIES, TAMARIND.

 Auty (Washington) replies:
I'm from Toledo and my mom was friends with Betty - you have strange ingredients that weren't in the original. This is an old school recipe - most people didn't even know what tamarind was when it was made. XD And anchovies are in the Worcestershire.

Also add chopped hard-boiled eggs to the salad, but the bean sprouts really makes the salad! I have fond memories of Timkos restaurant on the corner of Douglas and Sylvania in Toledo, Ohio!

I use to go to Timko's as well on the corner of Sylvania Ave and Douglas. Always had Betty salad. Absolutely the best!

I use to have a recipe similar to this, it was called just French dressing and the difference was that it called for dried chopped onions. I lost the recipe and am going to try this. We loved it!

I worked at Teledyne in Toledo. We would have lunch at Timko's soup and such a couple times a week. Little did we know she would become so famous!

She was a great lady.
